Police search for man accused of stabbing ex, kidnapping daughter

Police say they are searching for a man who raped and stabbed his ex-girlfriend, then kidnapped their 2-year-old daughter Thursday morning. Investigators say they are working to get an AMBER Alert issued.
The Grifton Police Department said officers and deputies are searching for 29-year-old Devine Dashawn Exum, who is wanted on charges of first-degree kidnapping, rape, and assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill inflicting serious injury.
According to investigators, Exum stabbed his ex-girlfriend at about 11:10 a.m. Thursday at River Walk Apartments on River Walk Way in Grifton.
Exum then kidnapped the 2-year-old daughter he and the victim have together, police said.
Police said they are working to get an AMBER Alert issued for the 2-year-old.
"We just want to try to locate [the suspect] and try to locate the child, make sure the child is safe, and that's the first and foremost in our mind right now is making sure the child is safe," said Grifton Police Chief Bryan Cauley.
According to Grifton Police, they were told by the Kinston Department of Public Safety that Exum was spotted driving west on Highway 70 after hitting a vehicle. Investigators said Exum is believed to be driving a blue 2002 Mercury Grand Marquis.
