NEWPORT, CARTERET COUNTY -

Police said they are searching for a man, armed with two guns, who robbed a Newport tobacco store.

It happened at Askar's Tobacco Shop, located on Highway 70 East, at about 9:30 p.m. Wednesday, according to investigators.

A black male entered the store with two small-caliber handguns drawn, police said. The suspect then allegedly demanded money from the store employee.

Police did not say how much money the suspect stole. The man was in the store for less than 30 seconds before running into the nearby woods, investigators added.

A K-9 unit from the Morehead City Police Department assisted Newport officers to track the robber down, but he got away, police said.

Anyone with information is asked to call Newport Detective Mike Alberti at (252) 223-5111 or email crimetips@newportpolice-nc.org.
