It was a close race for the New Bern mayor seat Tuesday night, so close that a runoff election will determine the winner.
The candidates with the most votes are Alderman Sabrina Bengel (1,650 votes, 30.47 percent) and Alderman Dana E. Outlaw (1,436 votes, 26.52 percent). The winner will be decided in a runoff election on Nov. 5.
"We made a good showing," Outlaw said at his watch party at The Stingray Cafe in New Bern.
"I challenge my challenger to talk about the issues," he said.
"We are going to talk about the issues," Bengel said at her party at The Chelsea in New Bern.
"My record speaks loud and clear, and I'm ready to put that record on the line to the voters," Bengel said.
