Deputies have arrested a suspect accused of shooting and killing a 15-year-old boy in Halifax County. A 2-year-old girl was also shot and killed that night, and investigators believe the shootings are related.
Halifax County Sheriff Wes Tripp said in a news conference Thursday afternoon that 19-year-old Samaj-Tojuan Clanton (pictured left) is charged with murder in the death of 15-year-old Keyuon Garner (pictured right).
Sheriff Tripp told ABC affiliate WTVD Garner was walking with a group when he was shot at about 9:30 p.m. Monday near 11th and Maple Streets outside Weldon. According to Sheriff Tripp, two men came out of a wooded area and began shooting.
The 15-year-old Garner was killed, while 20-year-old Calvin Robinson was shot in the back and 17-year-old Wilson Green was shot in the leg, said Tripp.
Because of the other victims, Clanton is also charged with two counts of attempted murder.
Sheriff Tripp did not explain a motive, but said during the news conference that more arrests are expected.
A second fatal shooting that claimed the life of a 2-year-old girl happened nearby about three hours after the first. At 12:30 a.m. Tuesday, Weldon Police responded to the 600 block of Cedar Street, where shots were fired into a home.
Police Chief Mark Macon told WTVD the gunman walked up to the house, then fired shots into a window.
A 2-year-old girl, identified by family as Dyana Anderson (pictured HERE), was killed in the second shooting, police said.
The toddler's 54-year-old grandmother, Katherine Price, was hurt, said police. At last check, she was in critical condition at a hospital.
The 2-year-old's grandfather told WTVD they were sleeping when they heard three shots.
The scene of the second shooting is less than a mile away from the first shooting. Investigators said the two shootings appear to be related, but no one has been charged for the second shooting.
