JACKSONVILLE, ONSLOW COUNTY -

Friends and family gathered at the Jacksonville Area Soccer Association Soccer Complex to hold a memorial soccer game for an Onslow County man who was killed in a car crash Sunday.

"He would be right out here with them if he could," said Cindy Fitzpatrick, the victim's mother.

Colin Fitzpatrick, 22, was killed around 3:15 Sunday morning. Troopers say he ran off the road and crashed into a tree. They say speed and the foggy weather were factors in the crash.

On Monday afternoon, everyone gathered for the soccer game -- a sport he loved. Fitzpatrick's parents say he also loved the outdoors.

"He loved to fish, turkey hunt, deer hunt, like his dad -- loved to be in the woods," they said.

Fitzpatrick's friends remember his character above all.

"A good friend to everybody -- you could talk to him about anything," said Jessica Barton.

Carli Compton had gone to school with him since their elementary days.

"It's more than just a friend," Compton said. "Like a piece of my family -- it's like a piece of our childhood has been taken."

Derrek Kennedy, also a childhood friend, set up the memorial soccer game.

"He definitely had the tendency to light up the room with his smile," Kennedy said. "Any time he would come to the room, you'd be able to tell that he was the life of the party."

His dad says Fitzpatrick was always involved.

"He had the energy to do anything," Larry said. "Just going to miss that the most. Him not being here, to be with us."

Friends hope that this memorial game will become an annual event.
