Family and friends say they will miss Marina Rivera-Medrano. Troopers say the 37-year-old woman passed away from a wreck in Lenoir County on Wednesday morning.
According to the Highway Patrol, Rivera-Medrano, of Snow Hill, was killed in the wreck at Grifton Hugo Road and Highway 11 just west of Grifton. It happened at about 7:12 a.m. Wednesday.
Troopers say the accident also injured the victim's 13-year-old daughter and the driver in the other vehicle.
Troopers said Rivera-Medrano was traveling east on Grifton Hugo Road, but went on Highway 11 without yielding at the intersection. This caused another vehicle, traveling southbound on Highway 11, to collide with Rivera-Medrano's red minivan, investigators said.
Rivera-Medrano was killed and her 13-year-old daughter suffered minor injuries, troopers said. Family members of the teenager say the girl experienced a cut to her face and swelling on her leg. The driver of the other vehicle, identified as Ranita Gaskins, of Winterville, also suffered minor injuries, according to investigators. They were taken to Vidant Medical Center.
Troopers said no charges will be filed because the deceased victim was at fault.
The Department of Transportation says there have been 20 accidents at that intersection over the past five years.
We're told Rivera leaves behind four kids-- ranging in age from 2 to 17 years old.
Rivera's boyfriend of eight years tells us she was originally from El Salvador and moved to America in the hopes of a better life for her and her family. Her boyfriend says she will be buried in El Salvador.
