PITT COUNTY -

No charges will be filed against the driver of a pickup truck from which a man holding down a mattress fell and died.

According to the Highway Patrol, the driver will not be charged because he stayed at the scene after the accident on N.C. 43 in Pitt County on Feb. 14. There was a mix-up and a first responder never took down the driver's information after the accident happened. When troopers announced Thursday they were looking for the driver, he turned himself in immediately.

Investigators said the man who died was John Pippen. They said Pippen was attempting to hold down a mattress that was being carried in the bed of the pickup. The truck was traveling on N.C. 43, south of Hill's Convenient Store in Pitt County, when Pippen fell from the vehicle, according to investigators.

Pippen was taken to Vidant Medical Center, where he later died, troopers said.
