More than 8 people were displaced from two separate fires in two communities in Carteret County Tuesday.

CARTERET COUNTY -

More than 8 people were displaced from two separate fires in two communities in Carteret County Tuesday.

The two fires happened around the same time. The first starting in the Kings Terrace community in Morehead City at 11:00 p.m. The left unit in a duplex caught fire and cause more than $30,000 in damages. One woman was displaced from that fire, a family of several more people was displaced from the adjacent unit. That apartment sustained smoke damage.

Morehead City fire fighters had the fire out within an hour. No one was hurt in that fire.

In the Merrimon area north of Beaufort, a second fire sparked up on the same night. It happened on Silver Dollar Rd. A mobile home went up in flames. Four people narrowly escaped that fire according to the fire marshal.

The home was a total loss. The family is taking shelter in the homes of other family members. It took fire fighters until 1:30 to have that fire under control.

The fire marshal says the fires could've been avoided if either of the homes had working fire alarms. It's suggested smoke detectors are checked every time there's a time change.

The American Red Cross assisted all of the families in these fires.

In the week up to November 7, the Red Cross responded to 20 home fires in Eastern North Carolina.
