VANDEMERE -

The town of Vandemere is adding to its waterfront access thanks to a new grant from the state.

The Coastal Recreational Fishing License grant was given to the town in the amount of $1,000,000 and is intended to increase waterfront access to the public. The town purchased a 9 acre plot of land Monday which is now Vandemere Waterfront Park.

The grant can't be used to directly benefit Vandemere's economy, however, once the park is developed, town officials hope the park will eventually grow town profit.

The park will have two floating boat ramps and a kayak dock, among other planned improvements. The $1,000,000 dollars will be paid over a period of 3 years.

The park's opening coincides with the eve of Hurricane Irene. Much of Vandemere had storm damage after the hurricane tore through houses and toppled trees in the area.

"Now, two years later, we're celebrating one of the greatest celebrations that we could've ever imagined and that's to acquire this beautiful property and opportunities that it provides us with down the road," Judy Thaanum, Vandemere's Mayor said.

The property was purchased from Fred and Catherine Praat.
