WASHINGTON, BEAUFORT COUNTY -

In the wake of the death of New Bern Police Officer Alexander Thalmann, we have learned that he was a member of Washington High School's class of 2010.

Washington High School Principal Russell Holloman remembers Thalmann well.

"We hadn't seen him for four years and yet it all comes back in an instant for us," said Holloman. "We were really holding out hope that we would hear good news and there may be a turn in his condition."

That, as we now know, did not happen. Thalmann died Monday afternoon.

Holloman says there were early signs that Thalmann would go on to serve his country and community.

"He obviously had a heart for service, and to go out and help others," said Holloman.

After his time at Washington High, Thalmann went on to join the Marines, before being sworn in as a New Bern Police officer.

"We're proud of the person he became when he left and the things that he did," said Holloman.

Holloman says as a result of Thalmann's death, he's stressing to his students and faculty to "appreciate the people that we are with while they are around us, and to take every moment and cherish it, and not take it for granted."

There is a vigil planned for April 2nd in honor of Officer Thalmann. For details click here.
