Funeral arrangements have been announced for Wayne County Sheriff Carey A. Winders.
A visitation is scheduled for Tuesday afternoon and evening at Faith Free Will Baptist Church in Goldsboro.
Funeral services are planned for Wednesday afternoon in the Kornegay Arena at the University of Mount Olive.
Winders suffered what appeared to be a massive heart attack at his home Friday morning, according to the Wayne County Sheriff's Office. He was treated at his home by Wayne County EMS, before being taken to Wayne Memorial Hospital.
The emergency room staff treated Winders, but he was later pronounced dead, stated the Sheriff's Office. He was 57 years old.
Winders is survived by his wife and three daughters.
According to his official biography on the Wayne County Sheriff's Office website, Winders was a Wayne County native who graduated from Charles B. Aycock High School in 1975.
Winders started his law enforcement career as a patrol officer with the Goldsboro Police Department in 1984. He first became the Wayne County sheriff in 1994.
