New Bern Police said no one was hurt when shots were fired into an occupied car Saturday afternoon, but one of the bullets did make its way through a nearby home.
Investigators said the call came in around 5:45, reporting shots fired on Bell Drive at Craven Terrace Apartments.
Danielle Kirkland said when she got home on Saturday afternoon she was welcomed by a shattered front window and bullet holes in multiple walls in her home.
“You’re in your home minding your business and then all of a sudden a bullet comes through. Nobody expects it to happen but it happened though," Kirkland said.
She said the stray bullet ended up under her Christmas tree. Kirkland said the bullet hole went right above the couch where her mother usually sits.
"We sit here all the time and normally when my mom gets off work this is where she sits, and you can see the bullet hole right. So if my mom would have been sitting here in this spot she probably would have got shot in the back of the head,” She said.
Neighbor Sherri Midgett said she was sitting in her home when the shooting took place.
"I heard the rapidness of the shots so I jumped up and got to the bathroom window, and that's when I saw people scattering and children running," She said.
Midgett said she believes the people involved don't even live in the neighborhood.
"Very chaotic, you had police cars coming from all directions. People were running. I don't know if running for cover or trying to escape," she explained.
Police tell NewsChannel 12 two women and one man was inside the car at the time. Investigators said shots were fired in the front seat and in a tire.
Right now, police are reviewing surveillance video, and they say they do have a person of interest in the case.
Investigators if you have any information about the incident, call the New Bern Police Department at 252-672-4100.
