ECU gets FSU transfer
Florida State transfer Terry Whisnant has signed and submitted a financial aid agreement to complete his transfer to East Carolina University announced Head Men's Basketball Coach Jeff Lebo on Tuesday.
A 6-foot-3, 185-pound native of Cherryville, N.C., Whisnant will have to sit out the 2013-14 season as per NCAA transfer rules, although he will be able to practice with the Pirates. He will have two years of eligibility remaining, starting in 2014-15.
"We are very excited about Terry's decision to join our team and return to his home state," Lebo said. "He's a talented player who possesses a lot of athleticism with the ability to shoot the basketball."
Whisnant played in 30 games for the Seminoles last season and made 19 starts. He established career-high for pointers per game (5.2), 3-point field goals made (32) and 3-point field goal percentage (.356). He started the season opener against South Alabama and the fifth game against North Florida before starting 17 consecutive games from Dec. 2 through Feb. 19, which included 10 ACC games.
He was a member of two postseason teams, earning playing experience in the 2012 NCAA Tournament and 2013 NIT. The Seminoles won 43 games during Whisnant's two seasons in Tallahassee, which included the 2012 ACC Tournament championship. He made 43 3-point field goals and shot 33.1 percent behind the arc during 55 games played.
A product of Cherryville High School, Whisnant earned the prestigious Mr. Basketball Award as a senior and was named AP Player-of-the-Year. He finished his prep career with the seventh-most points (2,561) in North Carolina boy's basketball history.
Whisnant becomes the fifth addition to the ECU program for next season and the second non-prep player. Joining him in arriving on campus this summer will be Gregory Alexander (Hampton, Va.), Antonio Robinson (Winston-Salem, N.C.), Brandan Stith (Lawrenceville, Va.) and Caleb White (Lynchburg, Va.).
