This is part of a news release from Mount Olive College:
After spending the past two seasons with the Seattle Mariners, former North Lenoir High School and Mount Olive College pitcher Carter Capps has been traded to the Miami Marlins. The trade took place during the Major League Baseball Winter Meetings in Lake Buena Vista, Fla. The right-handed reliever was traded for first baseman Logan Morrison.
According to the story on the Marlins’ website, the trade was first reported by the Miami Herald and confirmed by mlb.com, although neither team has formally announced the trade.
Capps, who is from Kinston, N.C., posted a 3-3 record with a 5.63 earned run average last year in 53 appearances, all in relief. He recorded 66 strikeouts and 23 walks in 59.0 innings pitched. He did not allow any earned runs in his final four appearances of 2013, which included two appearances against the Los Angeles Angels and two appearances against the Oakland Athletics.
Capps was selected by the Mariners in the third round of the 2011 Major League Baseball Draft. The day after his lone appearance in Triple-A, he was called up to the Mariners July 31, 2012. He finished the season with the Mariners and posted a 3.96 ERA with no decisions in 18 relief appearances.
At Mount Olive, Capps posted a 24-1 record in two seasons and set a NCAA Division II record with 24 consecutive wins. He was a consensus National Pitcher of the Year in 2011 and was also the 2011 American Baseball Coaches Association Player of the Year. In addition, Capps was named to the Capital One/CoSIDA Academic All-America First Team in 2011.
Capps is now the second former Trojan who will be wearing a different Major League uniform in 2014. MOC graduate Tom Layne signed a free agent contract with the 2013 World Series champion Boston Red Sox after spending the previous two seasons with the San Diego Padres.
