RALEIGH -

No. 6 NC State had its 15-game winning streak snapped by top-ranked North Carolina in game one of a three-game series on Friday night at Doak Field at Dail Park.

The Wolfpack (33-11, 14-8 ACC) welcomed the second largest crowd ever to take in a game at Doak Field. The official attendance of 3,048 matches the capacity of the stadium. The stadium record is 3,109 set in 2007 against North Carolina.

State fell behind the top-ranked Tar Heels (41-3, 19-2) by a 3-0 count in the first after Colin Moran’s 11th homer of the season. UNC extended that lead to 5-0 in the third and added another to make it 6-0 heading into the seventh. The Pack scratched for one in the seventh, but UNC recouped that run in the top of the eighth to set the final at 7-1.

Bryan Adametz went 2-for-4 with a run. Brett Austin also contributed a pair of hits in a 2-for-5 ballgame. Trea Turner went 0-for-3, but walked twice and stole two bases to reach 20 for the year and 77 for his career. Jake Fincher provided the Pack’s only RBI on a sac fly to right.

NC State reliever D.J. Thomas turned in a career-long 5 2/3 innings, holding UNC to one earned on five hits and two walks while striking out three. Will Gilbert held the Tar Heels hitless over the final 1 1/3. Starter Ryan Wilkins (5-2) took the loss after allowing three earned in the first.

Tar Heel starter Kent Emanuel (9-1) claimed the win on one earned over eight innings, fanning nine. Trent Thornton finished the game in a non-save situation, surrendering one hit in the ninth.

North Carolina opened the game with four hits in a row, the third being Moran’s three-run homer to straightaway center. In the third, Brian Holberton homered to right to make it 4-0. The second run of the inning scored on a two-out throwing error at second on a potentially inning-ending double play.

The Tar Heel lead grew to 6-0 in the sixth behind Mike Zolk’s leadoff single through the right side. He advanced to second on a sac bunt and took third on a groundout, before scoring on a passed ball.

State crossed the plate in the seventh after Adametz’s leadoff single to center. Logan Ratledge followed with an infield single and Turner walked to load the bases with nobody out. Fincher sent a sac fly to right to bring in Adametz, but the next two batters struck out to end the threat. North Carolina tacked on one more in the eighth on Landon Lassiter’s RBI double down the left field line.

New Bern native Brett Williams went 1-4 in the loss.  The Wolfpack returns to action on Saturday at 6:30 p.m.
